Direct‑to‑garment printing—your designs, printed on clothing
Direct-to-garment printing technique
Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing is a fulfillment technique where ink is sprayed onto garments, much like printing on paper. DTG printing technique is an excellent option for those who want to add complex, multi-color designs on t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, and other similar fabric items.
Vibrant colors, comfortable wear
DTG-printed designs soak into the clothing fibers. That way, the prints:
- Don’t sit on top of the fabric
- Remain uncracked over time
- Aren’t stiff and feel comfortable to wear
Efficient printing with water-based vegan inks
At Printful, DTG designs are printed using non-toxic vegan inks that ensure the garments are safe for adults and children. Have your designs printed with machines that are energy-efficient, produce zero wastewater, and are a sustainable choice for your brand.

Frequently asked questions
100% cotton products work best for DTG prints. That’s because they have excellent ink absorption that ensures high-quality, vivid print results. To have the best design outcome, we also recommend checking our guide on how to prepare the perfect design file for DTG printing.
DTG prints work only on materials that consist of at least 50% cotton and absorb water. DTG-printed designs on fabric blends with spandex, nylon, and other synthetic materials will be less durable and look faded as these materials tend to repel water.
Soft, fluffy materials, such as sherpa, brushed fleece, and terry cloth, can’t be used for DTG prints because the fabric is too thick and the surface is uneven. This can make the result look imprecise, blotchy, and faded. Learn more about our customization techniques.
Direct-to-garment printing is a digital printing method that uses specialized inkjet technology to apply water-based inks directly onto fabric. The DTG printing process delivers vibrant, high-quality prints.
Unlike traditional printing methods like screen printing, the setup time for DTG printing is relatively fast, making it ideal for low-volume orders.
No, DTG-printed designs can’t be added to all-over-print clothing as it’s colored using the sublimation technique that embeds the color into the fabric. Adding another ink on top of sublimated fabrics will make it bleed and mix with the garment’s base colors.
