Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing

What is direct-to-garment (DTG) printing?

Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing is a digital printing method used for garment printing. It involves using a specialized DTG printer that directly applies the ink onto the fabric using an inkjet printhead. Unlike traditional printing methods, such as screen printing, DTG printing does not require a separate screen for each color. This process results in high-quality prints with a high level of detail and vibrant colors. DTG printers are also capable of printing on a variety of fabrics, including t-shirts and other apparel, using a heat press to set the ink into the fabric.

What are the advantages of direct-to-garment printing?

Some advantages of direct-to-garment (DTG) printing include:

  • High-quality prints: DTG printing allows for more detailed and vibrant designs, with a wider range of colors than traditional printing methods.

  • Versatility: DTG printing can be used to print on a variety of materials, including cotton, polyester, and different blends, making it suitable for a wide range of garments.

  • Customization: DTG printing allows for on-demand printing of custom designs, eliminating the need for minimum order quantities.

  • Cost-effective: DTG printing can be more cost-effective than traditional printing methods for small orders or one-off designs.

  • Environmentally friendly: DTG printing uses water-based inks that are more environmentally friendly than traditional printing inks.

How long does direct-to-garment printing last?

The longevity of direct-to-garment (DTG) printing on a garment depends on a variety of factors such as the quality of the ink, the quality of the fabric, and how the garment is cared for. Generally, with proper care, DTG prints can last for a long time without fading or cracking. It’s not uncommon for a well-maintained DTG-printed shirt to last for several years.

Does DTG last as long as screen printing?

In general, DTG prints may not last as long as screen prints, particularly when it comes to white ink on dark fabrics. Screen printing inks tend to be more durable and can withstand repeated washes and wear over time, making them a popular choice for items that will be subjected to frequent use. That being said, with proper care and maintenance, DTG prints can still last a long time and retain their vibrancy.

Which is cheaper: direct-to-garment (DTG) or direct-to-film (DTFlex) printing?

The cost difference between DTG and DTFlex at Printful is small, and which one works out cheaper often depends on the garment type and your design.

DTG printing is most common for cotton products. It sprays water-based inks directly into the fibers of the garment, which can be slightly more expensive for certain products due to higher ink usage and fabric pre-treatment.

Learn more: DTG vs. DTFlex printing

DTFlex is Printful’s premium direct-to-film method. Your design is digitally printed onto transfer film with custom water-based inks, coated with adhesive, and heat-pressed onto the garment. Because it’s engineered for efficiency and consistency, DTFlex is often the better value for:

  • complex, colorful designs with fine detail

  • prints on fabrics beyond cotton, such as polyester, fleece, and nylon blends

  • designs that need strong durability and sharp, retail-quality edges

The best part? With Printful, you don’t need to buy printers, film, or powders like you would with regular DTF. Our in-house DTFlex setup gives you premium results on demand, and you’ll see exact prices for each product in the Product Catalog.
