How Much Does Etsy Take Per Sale: Breaking Down the Numbers

How Much Does Etsy Take Per Sale: Breaking Down the Numbers

Thinking of selling online in 2025? Etsy is one of the most accessible marketplaces for launching your store – but how much does Etsy take per sale?

In this guide, we’ll break down Etsy’s complete fee structure, including listing, transaction, and optional fees, so you can price your products smarter and protect your margins.

Etsy fees explained

Wondering what Etsy’s fees are and how they affect your bottom line? Etsy’s fee structure includes several types of charges that can impact your overall profit margins.

Listing fees

Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee to publish each product on your storefront. Listings stay active for 4 months or until sold. They can be freely edited, and auto-renewal is enabled by default. If you sell multiple quantities, Etsy charges another $0.20 each time an item sells.

The listing fee can appear in several ways in your payment account:

  • Listing fee: The initial fee for adding a new item for 4 months.

  • Auto-renew expired: An automatic renewal fee for unsold items after 4 months (you can turn off auto-renewal in your listings settings to renew manually).

  • Auto-renew sold: An automatic fee for selling more than one quantity of an item.

  • Multi-quantity: A fee for selling multiple variations of the same item in one transaction.

  • Private listing: A fee for a private sale to a designated buyer, unlisted to the public.

The Etsy listing fee is a non-refundable hosting charge. Whether the item sells or not, the fee remains applicable. For instance, if you list 10 items, you will be charged $2 in listing fees.

Transaction fees

Etsy takes a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price, shipping, and optional gift-wrapping.

For example, a $30 item with $5 shipping has a transaction fee of 6.5% of $35 = $2.28.

This fee is automatically deducted through Etsy Payments after a sale. It’s always calculated in the currency of your listing, not the location of the shop. So if you list an item in USD but run your Etsy shop from Australia, the 6.5% fee applies to the USD price.

In the US and Canada, the 6.5% fee only applies to sales tax if it’s included in the listing price. For sellers outside the US and Canada, mandatory sales tax must be included in the price, and the transaction fee will apply to this tax, as well as to shipping and gift-wrapping.

Let’s go

Payment processing fees

Etsy charges a payment processing fee for each sale, based on your region and payment method.

With Etsy Payments, the standard fee in the US is 3% + $0.25 per transaction. Find payment processing rates for other countries in the Etsy Help Center.

Etsy Payments supports major payment methods like credit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, and more. If you’re not eligible for Etsy Payments, PayPal is the alternative. This fee is only applied after a sale – no charge if the listing expires or is removed before selling.

Region-specific fees

Depending on the seller’s region, Etsy may apply extra fees based on the listing currency, applicable taxes, and platform operations.

Taxes on Etsy

Sales tax

Etsy automatically collects and remits sales tax in most US states. You’ll see the breakdown in your Etsy Payments account under the Sales and Fees section. If you're in a state where Etsy doesn’t handle tax, you’re responsible for collecting and remitting it yourself – so be sure to check your local tax rules.

VAT

In the EU and some other countries, Etsy applies value-added tax (VAT) to the total buyer price and to payment processing fees. Find specific tax rules for your country in the Etsy Help Center.

Etsy provides monthly VAT invoices, but it’s still a good idea to check with your local tax authority to understand your obligations.

Regulatory operating fee

If you’re selling on Etsy from a country with a digital services tax, Etsy applies a regulatory operating fee – a small percentage taken from each sale to comply with local tax laws. This fee is based on the total order amount, including the item price, shipping, and personalization charges.

Regulatory operating fees (2025):

  • UK: 0.32%

  • Canada: 1.15%

  • France: 0.47%

  • Italy: 0.32%

  • Spain: 0.72%

  • Turkey: 2.24%

  • India: 0.29%

  • Vietnam: 1.24%

If you operate from one of these countries, this is a mandatory Etsy seller fee that’s automatically subtracted from your payment account. You'll find it listed in your monthly statement under Seller Fees.

Currency conversion fee

If your Etsy shop lists products in one currency but your payment account uses another, Etsy charges a 2.5% currency conversion fee per transaction. This applies when Etsy needs to convert the buyer’s payment to match your payment account currency.

For example, if your product is listed in USD but your Etsy Payments account is set to EUR, a 2.5% flat fee is automatically applied during conversion. This charge is deducted from your total earnings for that sale and appears in your payment summary.

To avoid this Etsy seller fee, match your Etsy listing currency with your payment account currency whenever possible. It’s a simple way to reduce your total Etsy fees and protect your profit margins.

In-person selling fee

Planning to sell your products at a craft fair or market? Etsy supports in-person selling through its partnership with Square. When you connect your Etsy shop to Square, you can sync your product catalog and accept payments face-to-face through Etsy’s point-of-sale system.

Here’s how the in-person selling fee works:

  • You pay the $0.20 listing fee once, just like for online sales.

  • You don’t pay the 6.5% Etsy transaction fee when using Square.

  • Etsy payment processing fees don’t apply – Square offers its own rates (often lower).

Without Square integration, in-person sales are treated like online ones. That means you’ll be charged:

  • The 6.5% transaction fee.

  • The Etsy payment processing fee.

  • The multi-quantity listing fee if multiple items are sold in a single transaction.

Optional Etsy fees

Now, let’s go over optional expenses or fee structures that can improve your shop’s visibility, streamline shipping, and offer more customization options.

Etsy Ads

Etsy Ads are the platform’s main advertising tool, giving your listings more visibility in search results, category pages, and the Etsy catalog. Listings with optimized tags, strong demand, or higher bids are more likely to appear in ad placements.

Etsy Ads run on a cost-per-click (CPC) model, meaning you only pay when someone clicks your ad. The average CPC ranges from $0.20 to $0.50, and you can set a daily budget between $1 and $25 – the higher your budget, the more your ads appear.

Offsite ads

Offsite ads promote your listings on external platforms like Google, Facebook, and Instagram. All Etsy sellers are automatically enrolled, and if someone purchases within 30 days of clicking an offsite ad, Etsy takes a cut of that sale.

  • Sellers who earned under $10,000 in the past 365 days are charged a 15% fee and can opt out of the program.

  • Sellers who earned $10,000 or more are required to participate, but pay a reduced 12% fee.

This fee is based on the total sale price, including shipping and tax, and is capped at $100 per order.

Etsy selects which listings to promote based on performance and relevance.

Shipping label fees

Etsy allows sellers to purchase postage labels at a discounted price directly through their shop dashboard. Label costs depend on the package’s weight, dimensions, shipping speed, and destination.

Etsy partners with major carriers and applies commercial shipping rates, which are typically lower than retail prices. Exact pricing is shown during order fulfillment in your Etsy shop dashboard. You can find more information about shipping label fees in the Etsy Help Center.

This service is available to sellers using Etsy Payments or PayPal, and is currently supported in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and India.

Supported carriers include:

  • USPS

  • FedEx

  • Royal Mail

  • Australia Post

  • Canada Post

  • Global Postal Shipping

Etsy Pattern

Etsy Pattern is a paid tool that lets you create a standalone website using your existing Etsy listings. It offers customization options for your domain, layout, fonts, colors, and branding.

The service costs $15/month after a 30-day free trial. Unlike your Etsy shop, Pattern listings are free, don’t expire, and have no transaction fees – though payment processing fees still apply.

You can sync your Etsy listings to Pattern and manage both storefronts through the Shop Manager, making it easy to run everything from one dashboard.

Customization is somewhat limited, with only a small selection of templates and fonts. You’ll also need to buy a domain separately – Etsy partners with Tucows for domain registration.

Etsy fee examples

To help you better understand the costs associated with selling on Etsy, we’ve put together a few examples to give you a clear picture of what to expect with different product price ranges.

Low-priced products

Let’s start with a ceramic mug. It’s an affordable item, and the shipping cost is relatively low thanks to its moderate size and weight.

a man holding a mugSource: Printful

Product price for customers: $25

Shipping: $6

Cost of the product for you: $7

Shipping cost: $6

Total product + shipping cost: $13

Listing fee: $0.20

Transaction fee (6.5%): 6.5% * ($25 + $6) = $2.02

Payment processing fee (3% + $0.25): 3% * ($25 + $6) + $0.25 = $1.18

Total Etsy fees: $3.40

Revenue (product price + shipping): $31

Total costs: $16.40

Total profit: $31 - $16.40 = $14.60

Mid-priced products

Let’s use a glossy metal print. It’s pricier and needs extra packaging, making shipping a bit more costly.

Product price for customers: $70

Shipping: $10

Cost of the product for you: $34

Shipping cost: $11

Total product + shipping cost: $45

Listing fee: $0.20

Transaction fee (6.5%): 6.5% * ($70 + $10) = $5.20

Payment processing fee (3% + $0.25): 3% * ($70 + $10) + $0.25 = $2.65

Total Etsy fees: $8.05

Revenue (product price + shipping): $80

Total costs: $53.05

Total profit: $80 - $53.05 = $26.95

High-priced products

Now, let’s take a high-end handcrafted wooden table. Due to its size and weight, the shipping cost has increased significantly.

Product price for customers: $1,200

Shipping: $100

Cost of the product for you: $400

Shipping cost: $100

Total product + shipping cost: $500

Listing fee: $0.20

Transaction fee (6.5%): 6.5% * ($1,200 + $100) = $84.50

Payment processing fee (3% + $0.25): 3% * ($1,200 + $100) + $0.25 = $39.25

Total Etsy fees: $123.95

Revenue (product price + shipping): $1,300

Total costs: $623.95

Total profit: $1,300 - $623.95 = $676.05

FAQ

Etsy typically takes around 20–25% of the total sale price. This estimate can vary based on region-specific charges such as VAT or sales tax, regulatory operating fees, or the currency conversion fee. On a $100 order, expect about $20–25 in mandatory fees.

Optional costs – such as Etsy Ads, Offsite Ads, or subscriptions to services like Etsy Pattern – can increase your total expenses, especially for higher-priced items.

Use our Etsy Fee Calculator for the most accurate breakdown based on your location and settings.

Digital products follow the same fee structure – $0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction, and payment processing fees based on where your business operates (3% + $0.25 in the US). No shipping fees apply.

For example, if you sell a digital art print for $20 in the US, Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a $1.30 transaction fee, and a $0.85 payment processing fee. Your total Etsy fees are $2.35, leaving you with $17.65 in net earnings.

Yes, especially if you want to test products or reach niche audiences. With low upfront costs, Etsy is ideal for creators and new entrepreneurs. Just make sure to factor in the full fee structure when pricing.

Simplify your workflow even more using Printful’s print-on-demand services, which let you create and sell custom products without holding inventory through a synced Etsy integration.

Not typically. Standard fees average 20–25%. You may hit 30%+ for higher-priced items, or if you use Etsy Ads, have to pay off Etsy Offsite Ads fees, or sell internationally with extra fees.
